"The fraternity gave me a sense of belonging, For the first time I understood I could learn and experience more than I ever believed possible, and the only way was to work hard. We all have ability and talent that, given the right set of circumstances, is dying to come out. In the wrong environment it's going to be suppressed. If you're in the wrong environment, the question is whether someone or something comes along to help you change."

Why Join a Fraternity?

Very simple — a fraternity is a brotherhood. A college fraternity is such an organization with its membership chosen solely from university students. Tau Delta Phi Fraternity is a national academically oriented social fraternity — the national designation accruing to it by virtue of its having many chartered chapters at colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Fraternity life compliments the academic education of its brothers through life in a chapter, which is a melting pot of backgrounds, environment, and personalities. From these experiences evolves an individual well able to establish his place in society and in his chosen business or profession. The qualities and abilities that are stressed and recognized in undergraduate days are essential throughout life. Fraternities have made positive contributions to the development and growth of its brothers — learning to live in a group; tolerance, understanding, and respect for the dignity of other human beings; and the desire to assume responsibility in each stage of his life.

In undergraduate days, stress is also laid on proper scholarship, social relationships, leadership and extra-curricular activities on campus and within the chapter. Practically every undergraduate and chapter activity is recognized and rewarded. Tau Delta Phi is an organization bonded together through loyalty and dedication.

Joining a fraternity will give you a great support system of friends to help make the adjustment to college that much easier. You will have excellent scholastic resources available, as many fraternities and sororities provide their members with study groups or help with classes other members have already taken. You will learn valuable leadership skills and have the chance to practice them as a chapter officer, committee member or possibly even as an officer of the Interfraternity Council. You will be encouraged to get involved in a wide variety of campus organizations and student activities, including intramurals, football game day events, Greek Week, and Homecoming. You will also help others through community service and other philanthropic events. You will also be exposed to career opportunities through interactions with fraternity alumni from across the Midwest and the rest of the United States. Simply put, you will be joining one of the best Greek communities in the country and by far the best in Virginia!

True Brotherhood Since 1910: Brotherhood, Scholarship, Tradition

Brotherhood: The bond of brotherhood is one rooted in shared values, respect and friendship. The path to brotherhood is a journey, a process of personalgrowth and bonding. You experience new situations, you will be challenged to live to your full potential and you will make lasting friendships. To each individual, brotherhood is unique — they each have a different view of what it means to them. Yet to every individual, just as to every TauDelt, it means that they are part of a greater good. Social fraternities provide the opportunity for students to experience not only brotherhood, but many more activities and relationships which enhance the college experience. Tau Delta Phi is a social fraternity; this means that as a member, you will be exposed to an array of diversity. As a member of Tau Delta Phi, you will meet people from other cultures and backgrounds, forming lasting friendships that will last a lifetime. You will do this by interacting socially through intramurals, social events, joint service projects, programs, workshops and retreats.

Scholarship: Academics and scholarship were the ideals upon which Greek organizations originally were founded – Tau Delta Phi is no exception. As a Tau Delt, you will learn valuable study and time management skills. You will have access to a wealth of assistance in pursuit of your studies. You will be able to study with your fraternity brothers and exchange knowledge and ideas. Tau Delts have historically been academically endowed with intelligence and as a result they have flourished in their academics. As a Tau Delt, you will be involved with people of the same caliber who wish to succeed academically and do so honestly and with integrity. Tau Delts are not “frat boys” who are in college for life.

Tau Delta Phi is a democratic fraternity that provides opportunity to all. On this we pride ourselves on the numerous opportunities we provide for members to be involved. There are numerous opportunities for leadership development, be it as an executive officer in individual chapters or colonies, as a committee member or chair, a representative in the IFC or as undergraduate member of the board in the Executive Council. As well, Greeks are traditionally campus leaders and are involved in the many aspects of campus life in student organizations and student government. Tau Delts are not exceptions as they are presidents of student organizations, student workers, volunteers, and campus leaders. As a Tau Delt, you are given the opportunity for leadership who gives one power to make decisions which will effect not only the members but everyone involved. Tau Delta Phi fosters and encourages leadership.

Tradition: Tau Delta Phi historically stands for the principles of service: Service to Self, Community, and Brother. Brothers serve each other when they help advance each other forward. It is because of this principle that Tau Delta Phi requires such high educational standards for each brother and supports, with our education program, the development of brotherhood. Service to community takes place at all of our chapters! A Tau Delt knows how to serve the community; as Tau Delts, we support various service opportunities from blood drives to civic clean ups and campus volunteering. Service to Self takes place in a much more private way. Our brothers are asked to reflect on our ritual, our esoteric law and to incorporate those principles into daily life. We serve ourselves when we choose to have a high moral standard, when we follow in the footsteps of leadership with so many other men of our Fraternity, and when we choose to apply ourselves to our studies, our extracurricular activities and our chapter.
